History

The Alto Pampas wine range is made at Viña Concha y Toro in Chile. Concha y Toro was founded in 1883 by Don Melchor de Concha y Toro and his wife Doña Emiliana Subercaseaux. They planted their first vineyard to Bordeaux varieties in the Maipo Valley, attracted by the region’s advantageous position between the Andes and the Pacific Ocean. Since then, the company has grown enormously with 30 vineyards spanning over 5700 hectares of Chile’s Central Valley and expanded world-wide allying itself to Baron Philippe de Rothschild in 1997 to extend into the realms of the very finest wines.

Vineyards

Fruit for the Alto Pampas wines is taken from the Concha y Toro vineyards, which are present in all of the main winegrowing valleys of Chile and Argentina, with over 7,000 hectares or nearly 17,300 acres of plantings (including the vineyards subsidiary companies). These extensive plantings offer many topographies, soils and microclimates with which to work.

Winemaking

It is amazing that with so many wines made across Chile the process for Alto Pampas follows a similar system to all wines in the Concha y Toro portfolio. The focus is for a healthy balance between man and nature.
1.- Clean and controlled work. To ensure this policy, all the cellars have incorporated a series of facilities and protocols which aim to improve hygienic conditions, minimize residues, implement good practices programs and improve quality standards, among other measures.
2.- Respect for the grape. From the moment the fruit arrives at the cellar, undergoes fermentation and the rest of the winemaking process, it receives the utmost care and dedication. For example, distances between the different processes have been minimized to avoid excessive movement of fruit.
3.- Design and construction. The cellars have been designed with the highest architectural and construction standards in order to preserve the grapes’ aromatic qualities and to optimize extraction of their phenolic components.
