History

Established in 1779, the Bowmore distillery is one of the oldest in Scotland. It stands on the shores of Loch Indaal on the Hebridean Island of Islay.

The distillery is one of a few which still retains its traditional maltings. The the water is taken from the River Laggan which as it flows gathers colour and flavours from Islay peat. The close proximity of the distillery to the sea is vital in determining the final character of the Bowmore whisky, which is matured in the moist cellars at sea level.
